GVSN's Legal Lend-A-Hand Program starts Feb. 2013

Jan 28th All Day

Batavia, New York

The Genesee Veterans Support Network (GVSN) is a community based nonprofit located in Batavia that helps to determine the needs of area veterans, provide programs to meet those needs and to educate the community on pertinent veteran issues. GVSN acts as a referral agency assisting veterans in making community connections with local agencies for counseling, assistance with education and VA benefits, financial management, job development, mental health and substance abuse issues for themselves or family members. GVSN provides support to all veterans, active service members and their family members and is committed to being a primary resource for veterans and their families residing in Genesee County.

In 2013, GVSN would like to facilitate a new program which we are calling the Legal Lend-A-Hand Program which will provide initial legal consultations to veterans and their family members.  Gary Horton, Esq. Public Defender of Genesee County presented the program at the January 2013 GCBA meeting.

This program will be conducted in conjunction with University of Buffalo School of Law. Law students will meet with veterans under the supervision of local attorneys and will be implemented in February of 2013 at Genesee Community College.

GVSN has been in communication with Melinda Saran, Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Teaching Faculty at SUNY Buffalo Law School, who is very supportive of our program. Our program would assist law students to accumulate the volunteer hours needed for graduation. In addition students within GCC’s paralegal program will observe the process.

The Legal Lend-a-Hand Program would be scheduled to one evening a month, preferably the first Wednesday of each month from 7pm to 8:30pm.

The proposed subject matter schedule is:

February - Family Law including matrimonial, custody and visitation, support and family Offenses.

March - Small business Startups, Partnerships and Corporations.

April - a) Real Property, Buying and Selling Real Property, and Landlord / Tenant.

                      b) Contracts and Torts

May - Estate Planning and Elder Law.

Attorney participation may may qualify for pro bono obligation.  All attorneys interested in assisting the program may contact Gary Horton, Esq. for furhter information at teh Public Defender's Office at 585-344-2580 or by email at  Thank you.
